The naturally smart DHA® formula is recommended by leading specialists in women’s health and reproductive medicine as a non-fish source of Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). This supplement is designed specifically to support optimal development of the fetal brain, eyes and heart.

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that helps maintain healthy brain function in adults. In infants, DHA plays an especially critical role in neurological and brain development. It’s also important for visual acuity and retinal and cognitive development.

Omega-3 deficiencies in the mother can lead to deficiencies in the infant brain, so DHA supplementation is recommended for pregnant and nursing women – and also for women who are currently undergoing fertility treatment. The naturally smart DHA® formula can be taken safely during fertility treatment to help prepare for a successful pregnancy.

Studies shows that in animal models suggest that diets rich in DHA prolong fertility and increase the number of normal embryos. In addition to taking DHA prior to undergoing IVF, women anticipating delayed childbearing should consider supplementing their diets with DHA.

Several studies have shown that 3-6 months of increased DHA intake improves semen parameters: most importantly decreased DNA fragmentation.

Many omega-3 supplements only provide Eico-sapentaenoic Acid (EPA) but DHA is the more powerful component – and studies show that the more DHA a mother supplies to her unborn child, the better that child’s cognitive development will be. This is particularly true during the last trimester, when a developing fetus has an increasing need for adequate amounts of DHA.

The naturally smart DHA®formula contains 200 mg of DHA extracted from Algal oil, an excellent source of vegetarian DHA with no risk of mercury ingestion. Algal oil comes from microalgae. There are over 2 million microalgae species and most of them produce vitamins, mineral, and nutrients such as carotenoids, antioxidants, fatty acids, enzymes, polymers, peptides, toxins, and sterols. Not only are microalgae rich in nutrients, but they are also capable of photosynthesis – they produce atmospheric oxygen while using up greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide.

It is important to note that DHA supplementation may not be appropriate for all women and you should always discuss the matter with your physician prior to use. DHA supplementation should be avoided if you have active bleeding; please consult with your physician before use. It is also advisable to consult your doctor prior to use if you have any of the following conditions: aspirin sensitivity, bipolar disorder, coagulation disorder, cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, and/or familial adenomatous polyposis. Please consult your doctor prior to use if you are taking any of the following: anticoagulants, aspirin or aspirin containing medication, antidiabetic agents, antihypertensive medications, or SSRI antidepressants. Special caution is advised if you are taking alpha-tocopherol (synthetic Vitamin E), German chamomile, danshen, dong quai, evening primrose oil, fenugreek, feverfew, garlic, ginger, ginkgo biloba, Asian ginseng, goldenseal, passion flower, horse chestnut seed, licorice, red clover, and willow bark.

Please note as well that DHA supplementation may be especially important if you are a vegetarian or vegan, because vegetarian diets are typically low in DHA and vegan diets supply no DHA.

In addition, increased DHA intake is known to protect against cardiovascular disease. All people should consider life-long supplementation of this important nutrient. With the precautions noted above, high intake of DHA is generally safe and well-tolerated by most people.
